I'm relatively new to gardening, but I love home grown tomatoes. I hope for this web site to be a place where vegetable gardeners can come to get information about tomato growing techniques, as well as follow a new gardener's experiences in the garden. 2001 is my third year gardening, and I'll be growing 17 different varieties of tomatoes (18 plants). Below is a brief description of the links at the top of this page. Thanks for visiting! And be sure to stop by my Home Grown Tomatoes Forum on Delphi Forums!
CaspianPink0731.jpg (13720 bytes) News: Well, it's July 31 and I've eaten my first ripe tomato of the season! It was of the variety Caspian Pink, which is only recently known in America (a couple of years, if I remember correctly). The photo to the left shows Caspian Pink sliced through the 'equator' of the tomato. With better weather, and better technique I beat the 'first ripe' of last year by about a week. And ironically, that first tomato was the 'early' variety called Early Girl. Things should get really busy in the next few weeks, as many more tomatoes ripen, including the paste tomatoes I will be using in salsa and sauce for canning. I'll work on this web site diligently over the next week or so, to add some long, long overdue journal entries, photos, and tomato content.
Message Board

I enjoyed growing my tomatoes so much in 1999 that I decided to get more involved on the Internet, and I figured, "What better way to get involved than to start my own forum?". So I did! I hope to bring a beginner's perspective to growing tomatoes, and strike a balance between giving advice to some people, and absorbing experience from others. When you click the 'Message Board' link at the top of the page, it will open a new window in your browser. Delphi will let you read messages as a Guest, but to post you need to create a username and password. Fortunately, this is pretty straightforward. I hope to see you on my message board!

To the right are the eight most recent discussions posted on the forum. Click one of them and you will be brought to that message in the forum (if this is your first time on Delphi, you can either sign on as 'Guest' or create your username and password as described above).

Tomato Central

This page, when complete, will have lots of, you guessed it, tomato information. Right now you see a rather forlorn looking page with a bunch of links that do nothing. I should know better than to do this, as I am quick to criticize other sites that have unfinished pages. But, in my defense, I do not use the dreaded 'Under Construction' graphic anywhere. I think it best that I start out modestly, with mostly categorized links, and then add my own content. I just have to carve out some time to work on the page.

My 2000 Garden

This link takes you to a graphic of my 2000 garden layout. It is an image map, which means when you click on different parts of the graphic, a different description will launch. For example, if you click on 'Early Bush Beans', some text will load, describing the variety, spacing, and other details of my early bush beans.

My 2001 Garden

This page, as it stands now, shows my 2001 garden plan, with some information about how I created it in PaintShop Pro. As I add photos, I will provide links for the different vegetables I am growing this year, as I did for 2000.

Garden Journal

This link brings you to a page listing my gardening journal. In it, I try to write anything I did that was garden-related. That includes seed starting activities, shopping, compost, planting, weeding, harvesting, and more. This will be updated periodically, so come back every now and then. Maybe it can help you feel better about your gardening experiences when you see me admit mistakes and failures throughout the season (although I hope to minimize them!).

Photo Gallery

This link brings you to a page with links to different photos from my garden. These will include periodic photos taken of my garden as a whole, to show its progression throughout the season. It will also show close-ups of my garden plants at various stages, and any insects, weeds, and diseases I note.

Books

This link brings you to a page with books I recommend. Initially I just have two books (I just added this link on April 15th) up there, but eventually I'll have several more. You can buy the books from Amazon.com by clicking on the title of the book, or on the graphic image of the book.

Gardening Links

This link will take you to a page with links, both tomato-related and general gardening-related. I hope to add to it periodically, and I welcome any links you suggest! I'm open to link-trading, if it helps generate traffic to my Tomato Message Board!
